How can we build Vermont’s food system in the next ten years?
That’s the central topic of a well-organized conversation that’s happening in 8 places across Vermont in the next month.
The Farm to Plate Initiative and the Sustainable Agriculture Council are organizing local food summits. Farmers, food businesses and other stakeholders are being invited to say their piece. In the end, the state will spend some loot to make it happen. It sounds like government at it's best: trying to do good stuff…

For one who has perception,
A mere sign is enough.
For one who does not heed,
A thousand explanations
Are not enough
Hajji Bektash Wali
13th Century Persian Mystic,
During the past twelve months, it has been reassuring to see vast numbers of individuals in the United States awaken to the reality that life on this planet has profoundly shifted and will never be the same. Many have radically altered their career goals, spending and saving patterns, and their long-term priorities. Whe…

Symptoms
From:
Catherine and Daily Musings
When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion —
when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing —
when you see money flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors —
when you see that men get richer by graft and pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you —
when…

A few years ago, my husband and I decided to get some chickens. We decided to let them be free range as we have a 4 acre field in front our house...As they were to be free range, I liked to think of them as Gypsies and decided to paint their house like a Gypsy wagon with the words Happy Chicken Wagon boldly on the side. When I went to pick my chicks up from my friends house my husband loaded the Happy Chicken wagon into the back of the truck and down the road I went, with the help of my true far…

I just put up my playlist embeds for the finished episodes (or chapters as I call them) to Business as Usual "the doomer sitcom". I hope some people here get something out of them. The language is often crude, as it often is in the workplace, and the satire biting. I am an equal opportunity offender here. You can watch it as a doomer or watch it as a denier and still find something to laugh about and characters to relate to. That was the intention, to pull in as wide an audience as possible and…

Free Vermont Radio needs your help. You buy local food and other Vermont made products but for some reason pushing Vermont made music is more difficult. We are going on our 4th month of broadcasting live Vermont made music at
Free Vermont Radio and to be honest we have plateaued in the number of listeners. When I first took on this project I really thought it would be well accepted. However, it turns out that the youth seem to have th…

It's been a busy couple of weeks here in the NEK, and Transition Caledonia has been active on the work party front. One of the main pieces of our community is that we are incorporating the thought of many hands make light work. Last weekend on Saturday the 19th we gathered at the homes of Paul and Audrey Tomasi and cut, split and stacked a lot of wood. This Saturday the 26th, we cleaned, cleared and moved wires in Elaine's basement in order to get her ready for weatherization. An 1812 house with…

One of the most important ingredients in building a community is sharing meals together. Family gathering are almost always accompanied by breaking bread, carving the turkey & eating cake....Food is not only nourishing to the body, but the soul. As we walk down the path of Community Resilience through this time of transition it's important to add heart to what we do. Spend time together in a social setting, get to know one another. One of the best ways to do this is through eating one anothe…
