Profile Information

"How are you involved in preparing for the changes that peak oil, economic instabilty and climate change are bringing, and in creating resilience and sustainable life style in our communities?"
Talking with people in Hardwick about their experience in getting one started, hoping to get one started in St. Johnsbury. I recently went to hear Jim Merkel speak, and have had conversations with him about speaking at St. Johnsbury Academy.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I want to save the world from itself. I teach high school, and have included lessons in building solar ovens and solar cars in an attempt to raise awareness about alternative energy sources. The transition town model seems like a really good way to build awareness about these ideas in the greater community.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
Help to make St. Johnsbury a transition town, making use of my ties with the food co-op and the school, and incorporating nonviolent communication principles.

Hi Elaine, just noticed what? I'm not good at following threads on this Transition site!

Thanks Elaine for thinking of me!

It's just too much this week, given that I'm away over the weekend for a Planning Commission event in Fairlee. I would have appreciated the visiting time with you, though (I would have gone home with you from Montpelier, rather than my regular vanpool).

Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

Hello Elaine - Glad I looked you up on the net and found this site. Please keep me in the loop regarding a workshop in VT. It would be extremely beneficial to the work I am doing right now. Fondly -Tg

Hi Elaine: Passing on this resource (Joanna Macy) that was passed to me by two educators at Karme Choling running a workshop for young teens (I was there for dathun and was pretty psyched to have all that young energy around...) http://www.joannamacy.net/

By the way, thank you for our lovely dragons - they are energizing our living room (I think I found the right place for them), and the cactus they're over is sprouting about 100 bright red flower buds!

See you soon,
Nancy Lewis

Hi Elaine,

I'm also in St. Johnsbury & would love to be involved with a Transition Town St. J. I'm part of a food security & sustainability group that came out of Jim Wuertele's sustainability gatherings over the winter. I also did the transition training in March in Montpelier. Can you keep me posted on what's going on & count me in?

Hey Elaine,
A workshop on NVC would be great. We had a good meeting today so keep an eye out for the minutes in the core coordination group page. We have pretty much nailed down our dates and concept to begin scheduling around. August 21-30. This is 2 higher energy weekends with a week in the middle of daily activity. Each day of the week has a focus -water/shelter/food/energy/transportation and the weekends are devoted to community. We are encouraging people to help schedule and organize events within this framework to make a impactful, informative and fun week. NVC seems like a community event that could happen on the weekend. We are not exactly sure how this will all shake out so it is still workable.

I was pretty thrilled to see you wanted to add Nonviolent Communication - it's pretty basic to everything...

Oh yeah,
I have recently added this idea of a transition village/neighborhood development to the Sustainable community development group if that is of interest.

Hi Elaine,
It depends how much time you are talking. Currently my schedule is tight. If you had access to some kind of honorarium, it would make it easier. Also if you could give me a sense of what to cover.
Currently my work has been around merging Passive House principles with Natural building in the more technical realm of building science/creating a Permacultural approach to designing structures and development in general/and understanding how to think about energy efficiency and low impact development from a wholistic point of view.

Cheers,
Ben
