Profile Information

"How are you involved in preparing for the changes that peak oil, economic instabilty and climate change are bringing, and in creating resilience and sustainable life style in our communities?"
I am a member of the steering committee for Transition Town Montpelier.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
The Transition movement provides an exciting and flexible roadmap to energize our communities into positive action as we meet an energy lean future and creatively move into a saner, more Earth-connected way of life.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
As a community herbalist and Director of Wisdom of the Herbs School in Woodbury, Vermont, I seek to connect students and community members with the local wild edible and medicinal plants. I see again and again the sparkle that comes with the realization that we as human animals can sustainably forage and enhance our daily diets with wild plants and make our own medicine to care for ourselves and our communities; that we are truly and deeply a part of Nature. This is what the Transition movement calls The Great Reskilling.

Wild Edibles and the “Great Reskilling” by Annie McCleary

Peak oil and the reality of global warming require that we once again find our food locally – wild food as well as cultivated. We can no longer rely on long distance transportation to supply our daily food needs, or any other needs for that matter. The end of the age of cheap oil and the resulting globalization that led us to become an import-dependent society are giving way to the age of relocalization, when we will once again be responsible for cultivating and wild foraging our food staples lo… Continue

Just left this comment re businesses on Ron's page, fyi.

Hey Ron!
Saw yr question on Annie's page. No, businesses cannot 'join' per se. Members are individuals, who can then put up a 'group' for their Transition aligned business.

You need to leave a comment on their page something like this:
Just to clarify, members are individuals, groups are groups. Could you please click on 'edit' here on your page, and change "biz name" to your name? Feel free to put up Kismet as a "Group". Click 'groups', "add group".

Thanks Annie!
As we get this group going, we will be interested in hosting workshops. It is an exciting time; to see all the threads coming together.

we will definitely have to meet, than you! I can feel your warm energy already, and am very interested in so many of the things you do -- I think survival skills and knowing how to forage could be very important to retaining personal freedom in the not so distant future, I am not trying to operate from a fear base, but from empowerment, how can I feel safer in the world? I noticed oodles of things growing in our little meadow this summer and thought, 'I've got to learn what these things are!' (so I'm ready for one of your classes :-) As a teenager I loved the Ewel (mispelled?) Gibbons books on wild harvesting, but have done little since. Now;s the time!

hi, and thanks for your quick message! Where do you live? Yes, I know the Greensboro srea quite well, we've had an old farmhouse there for 25 yrs, and used to dream a moving up at least for a year with our 4 kids (now grown, 3 went to Putney). At that time we had a horse farm. Nothing ever happened with our romantic dream of moving to VT, as VT winters did not seem conducive to our breeding operation. Our recent story is we've been caught up in real estate drama, and boy are we grateful to have a house in VT, we could never buy it now :-) You are right, there are amazing people in the Hardwick area, and Buffalo Mtn is a real hub. I am so looking forward to having this move behind us -- I have never lived in a community surrounded by kindred spirits and I am so excited. We were in Greensboro for about 3 mon. this summer/fall and I have never felt myself so surrounded by kindred spirits and welcomed by the community! I look forward to mtging you in person. Joanna

Annie-

Thanks for the welcome.

Transition is a big deal here. Locally we've got municipalities going green with the eco-municpality movement, but it is often more talk than action. A very active and growing Alliance for Sustainability is encouraging. It's really full-time and fully active here. So far to go though....

Hi Annie! Thanks for your warm welcome! I hope to get storage going in my own cellar for the next growing season. With encouragement from Les, I also just posted a Transition Town Waterbury group that is waiting approval. I'm not sure I am qualified to lead this group but I am happy to at least get it going! Any suggestions you have for where to go from here will be greatly appreciated. I am hoping to at least start by getting members together to study the Transition Handbook. Best, Nicole

Annie,
We are getting together three times to, each time, discuss a part of the Transition handbook. The dates are 11/24, 12/8 and 12/22

Annie, Thank you for your warm welcome.
Putney transition is indeed cranking. After a very heart warming, enthusiastic and very well attended (50) meeting two weeks ago, we are starting a book group this tuesday.
It's happening

I'm visiting my brother who is currently a student at Middlebury and I am thinking of moving to this town and getting involved in the local community and green movements here. I'm not certain how long I will be staying, but I would love to find out what's going on and get involved anyway. Thanks for the tip on Acorn... I'll go down and say hello! Thanks for welcoming me, too! Best, Bente

The newest member applicant lists a business, not an individual. Can you join the site as a business?
