how about: * diversification - coppiced hedgerows for fuelwood, orchard establishment, growing fodder because climate change = rainy summers in vt = bad weather for haying * farmhand housing program - (of sorts) creating on-farm (affordable/barter)…

Or maybe the question should be, 'how can permaculture save Vermont's dairy farms?' How can dairy farms transform to avoid the teetering of make-or-break? I elaborated on this discussion question in a blog post here. I propose conversation in two…

I don't know about folks in Northfield, but Chris Jackson and several others in Plainfield are really savy with orchard care. They're all part of the Winooski Valley Permaculture group on here. Cheers!

What can permaculture do?

It seems to me that experienced permaculturists are the experts, or experts-to-be, on solutions to peak-oil and ecological sustainability. Yet it frustrates me that I don't see them getting the public attention that they should.

"Permaculture is a movement which offers, as redefined by Holmgren, the design system and philosophical underpinnings of a post-peak society, yet at the same time, according to Stewart, it is often guilty of maintaining a distance from that society." (Hopkins, Transitio… Continue

Alec,

I couldn't agree with you more, I have to rephrase my profile.

The essence of what your getting at is that our perception of what is convenient has to change. Perhaps I was in error when I associated convenience with laziness. Convenience can also be a skill.

More specifically, I take issue with convenience at the cost of others. Thank you for pushing me to think about this further.

You asked: ..Does the Ning have apps for sharing posts with Facebook etc? ... Not that I'm aware of but stay tuned, because Ning makes frequent upgrades. If you discover some kind of auto sharing, please let me know.

Hey Alec
I'm excited to hear about your land and the vision to begin coppice management there. I have a fair bit of experience with established coppice systems in Britain and would be happy to talk with you more about establishing yours. Feel free to give me a call at 999-2768 to talk more.

Sorry to hear you can't make the workshop on Wednesday. I will be doing it again in Montpelier May 5 at Hunger Mtn. so hopefully that'll be a little more convenient for you but might be a bit late to wait to start cutting.

Give me a call and we can share ideas. I'd love to come out and visit to see what you're dealing with.
Best wishes and looking forward to future connections!
Mark
