Montpelier 2009, An open space reskilling event for Central VT

To view individual planning committees click on "Subgroups" above. These include: Coordination Projects Workshops
August 22-30th 2009 was an inspiring week for those who attended the 1st Village Building Convergence in Central Vermont. We saw the creation of a clay bread oven at the Adamant Coop and the beginning of a permaculture installation at 190 Main Street in Montpelier as well as 36 workshops/presentations and community building events. Carolyn Baker kicked off the week with her amazing presence and awareness of our path forward with Jim Merkel giving us his insight on how change happens to wrap things up at the end of the week with the undeniably danceable Sambatucata from Burlington.
Check out www.villageconvergencevt.org for details.

Please let us know if you are interested to be apart of next year's event.

For anyone who has not heard of the inspiration of the Village Building Convergence in Portland ,OR please check out their website at http://www.cityrepair.org/wiki.php/projects/vbc8

The basic idea is a week long event where local transitioneers gather to share their skills and inspire communities and individuals to creatively transform the places where they live and turn the synergy into real projects around the village. During the day people are working throughout the village making sculptural earthen benches, herb gardens, root cellars and learning how to manage a village forest for fuel or find their own medicine. Then at night a common gathering place hosts presentations, performances and lots of dancing!

A few other tasks that people can consider:
•Putting up posters.
•Submitting calendars items to local papers.
•Being a host at any of the events.
If you are interesting in helping please let us know what you would like to do and someone will let you know how to proceed.

Thanks

If anyone has time this week, we need help navigating through the bureaucracy in City Hall to get our gorgeous new VBC banner up on the brick wall next to the fire station. Gwen Hallsmith (who's away on vacation) emailed me instructions. Send me a message if you're able to take this on and I'll send you the info.

Sure thing! One really cool thing -- though there are probably plenty others -- would be to film (and edit if possible)(equipment is provided) events to create educational videos for television, and posting on catalystnow.org, villageconvergencevt.org, YouTube, etc. If you're interested in this email me -- alec@catalystnow.org.
Cheers!
And if you're not into filming, you can send an email to one of the organizers using the webform on VBC's website

Are there any small tasks that need doing for the VBC?

It's great to see the crucial role of improving communication skills being recognized here! This is an area that the Heart and Soul groups, (by whatever name), in Transition Towns often address.

yes, i do - about half a dozen of them. i took a class this winter which was taught by newcomb greenleaf, and alice and sam silverman, among others. i spoke with them last sunday about transition towns and how nvc might fit in with it, and they were pretty excited.

Hi Elaine, YES! I totally agree - thanks for this suggestion. Do you know NVC teachers in the area who might be interested in leading a workshop?
elaine parshall Comment by elaine parshall on April 21, 2009 at 8:52pm
ok, i see the difference between projects and workshops now. So i need to amend my previous comment to 'i'd like to see a workshop on NVC at VBC.
