Transition Town Montpelier

Leave a message here for Annie McCleary to join the Transition Town Montpelier email list. Transition Town Montpelier is now the 6th "official" Transition Initiative in the United States, and the first in the East, along with Portland, Maine. The initiating committee—Annie McCleary, Carl Etnier, George Lisi, Scott Sawyer, and Deb Lisman—has been meeting weekly since June 2008.

With support from a Mazer grant through the city of Montpelier and an anonymous donor, Transition Town Montpelier’s mission is to help facilitate the development of resilient systems for overcoming peak oil and climate change in Montpelier and surrounding communities. Our tools consist of Open Spaces, workshops, trainings, information sharing, networking, working groups, and passion for re-introducing a wide range of skill sets and developing visible manifestations of progress toward a more sustainable future.

Our first public event on November 4, 2008, "Transition Towns: From Oil Dependency to Resilient Communities" with Naresh Giangrande (one of the originators of the Transition Town concept in the U.K.), was a fantastic success with over 220 Vermonters gathered at the Unitarian Church for an incredible celebration of community power.

Subsequent activities have included:

January 10, 2009: Transition Town Montpelier Open Space Meeting and Networking

February 25, 2009: The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil (video), followed by discussion with Ben Falk

March 7, 2009: Training for Transition with Alastair Lough, PhD, and Patricia Proulx-Lough.

March 30, 2009: Lawn to Garden Conversion, with Mark Krawczyk.

April 4, 2009: Open Space: Feeding Our Communities

Feeding Our Communities Working Groups:
State House Food Garden
Neighborhood / Backyard Gardening

April 27, 2009: The Post-Oil Homestead: Skills for the Transition, with Ben Falk

Ongoing:
Transition Stammtisch at Langdon Street Café, every Tuesday from 5:30 to 7.

Hi Community! Thanks to the founders of the Montpelier Initiative - I'm so excited about this. I've been telling everyone about the first two meetings and getting more people aware and interested in the movement. One thing that would be helpful is if we knew more in advance what the schedule of upcoming meetings might be so we can plan ahead to be there and to let others know about it. This is the top priority! Thanks again for organizating it founding team!

Les Squires is the Web Wizard who puts ups, maintains and tunes these these sites for all US Transitioners, via Transition Network US. He lives in Colorado. If you have questions about how to do this or that on the site, he's the guy to ask.

Hello,
I have been trying to figure out how to develop a platform for all of the various sustainability groups to work together and I am very excited by the potential of the VT Transition Towns. Thanks to the founding team!
What do we do now? And how do we sustain participation? How do we create a sense of progress without burn out, when a lot of us have been working on these issues for years and the last thing we need is another group to be a part of? Vermont movements seem to be plagued by disintegration. I have started a discussion on one idea that could help to sustain involvement and a sense of things happening. I have always be so impressed by the vision of the collective intelligence and resourcefulness of Vt's creative individuals and wondered what would this look like if we brought them all together. I think we got a sense of that feeling is like at the first Montpelier TT meeting at the U. Church.
Who has been to the Common Ground Festival in Maine and came away with this inspired sense of wanting to get involved and be a part? Lets create a similar event right here in Montpelier. I think it would be a wonderful way to share what everyone is doing in a fun and productive way.

Hey all, I just came from a PocSun (post carbon sustainability network) meeting in Montpelier. There were six of us there. Six focused folks. The group is working on rootcellars for the next two years - raising awareness, how to site and build one, and actually get them in place. Keep an eye out for workshops at Hunger Mt Coop,, displays at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, and folks growing and storing more root crops to go with the popcorn and bacon. Look for more on the activities of this group soon. Here's to carrots, beets and rutabagas. Annie
