HOW VERMONT CAN PROSPER WHILE THE GLOBAL ECONOMY MELTS DOWN
A free public event with ‘Going Local’ Author, Michael Shuman
Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 4:00 pm Vermont Statehouse, Montpelier, Vermont
Followed by a reception and book-signing in the Statehouse Cafeteria
Michael Shuman advocates that the key to Vermont's prosperity will be creating and supporting local businesses that put community first. And we need to strengthen those businesses through better entrepreneurship programs, small business networks, public policy changes, and "local first campaigns". An economist, attorney, author, and entrepreneur, Shuman has authored, coauthored, or edited seven books, including The Small Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses Are Beating the Global Competition (Berrett-Koehler, 2006) and Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant Communities in the Global Age (Free Press, 1998). For more about Michael’s work see his website: http://www.small-mart.org. One of the goals of this event is to provide people with concrete suggestions to actively build a local, sustainable economy.
Michael Shuman’s discussion is part of the celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week and is sponsored by many community partners from around Vermont including Preservation Trust of Vermont, Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund, Community Capital of Vermont, New England Grassroots Environment Fund, Central Vermont Community Action Council, Vermont Venture Network, Merritt-Merritt-Moulton, Vermont Business Magazine, Concept2 and Bear Pond Books.
Also sponsored by UVM’s Vermont Business Center Leading and Learning public discussion series that brings together national leaders from business and education to explore current issues in leadership. All discussions are free and open to the public thanks to the generous support of sponsor, Northfield Savings Bank. Reservations are recommended. To reserve your seat online go to http://www.uvm.edu/vbc/vermont_local_entrepreneurship or call the Vermont Business Center at 888-222-3413 or 802-656-4033. I look forward to seeing you there!
